Subaru announced this week that its 2026 Outback will use Android Automotive OS. This makes Subaru one of the first major automakers to use Google’s vehicle-specific operating system. Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Automotive processor, the setup gives drivers access to Google services like Maps, Assistant, and other on-the-go apps without requiring a connected smartphone.
The automaker doubled its infotainment system’s memory and storage to 8GB RAM and 128GB, respectively. Subaru says map swipes are now three times faster, audio screen transitions are six times faster, and general scrolling is twice as quick. The system has a 12.1-inch display powered by an Adreno GPU, supports Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.2, and includes a Spectra ISP for live HDR camera feeds with better low-light performance.
Here’s a little more information from Subaru itself:
The 2026 Subaru Outback includes wireless Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™ connectivity, and SiriusXM® 360L audio featuring newly launched artist stations with a 4-month trial. Available on select trim levels, TomTom® hybrid cloud navigation delivers real-time guidance, natural voice assistance, and continuously updated maps. The system can also integrate with Google Maps via Android Auto™. A transparent data interface provides clarity and control over how vehicle information is used.
Automatic over-the-air updates keep the software current without dealership visits.
