Google Chrome comes preinstalled on Android devices, and many of us make peace with it as the default browser. But over time, Chrome on Android has become bloated, stagnant, and increasingly hostile to power users. It lacks the versatile toolsets found in its desktop counterpart.
But you don’t have to settle for such a daunting default. I was tired of Chrome, too, and that is why I tried these five browsers. Instead of mimicking Chrome, these browsers actively outperform it.
Vivaldi
Desktop class interface and tab management
Tab management experience of Chrome feels like a dumbed-down version of what you get on a desktop. Vivaldi takes the opposite approach: it treats you like a power user who wants a desktop experience on their phone.
The Tab Stacking is one of the features that made me like Vivaldi. Instead of Chrome’s messy, infinite card stack, Vivaldi allows you to organize tabs into two distinct rows, similar to a desktop. You can group travel tabs in one stack and news tabs in another, keeping your workspace organized.
With built-in tools like a Notes panel with desktop sync support, full-page screen capture, and a highly customizable menu that lets you rearrange buttons, Vivaldi feels like an operating system within an app.

While not a replacement for high-security enterprise tools, Opera’s free built-in VPN is a perfect solution for bypassing geo-blocks and adding a layer of security when using public Wi-Fi—something that requires third-party apps in Chrome’s case.
Opera even features My Flow. A chat-like interface that lets you send files and not just links, unlike Chrome, which is also slow to sync in comparison. Combined with significant mobile compression for users on limited mobile data plans, Opera is the ultimate utility browser.

Microsoft Edge
Productivity powerhouse with GPT-4 built-in
Many users still associate Edge with the ghost of Internet Explorer, but the mobile Edge is a legitimate productivity beast. The deep integration of Microsoft Copilot was most useful.
Google’s Gemini AI is amazing, but Chrome still struggles to integrate it meaningfully on mobile. The Edge browser allows you to pull up the sidebar and summarize long PDFs, articles, or webpages instantly. It transforms how you consume information.

Edge is not what Internet Explorer used to be.
Additionally, the Read Aloud feature uses neural text-to-speech that sounds shockingly natural—perfect for turning long articles into podcasts while you are on a long drive.
Edge also includes Drop. A dedicated side panel that lets you transfer files between your phone and PC once you sign in to Edge with your Microsoft account you used on your desktop.
You can send files, photos, and notes instantly with Drop. This removes the friction of switching to another app or emailing files to yourself, creating a seamless bridge between mobile and desktop work sessions.

Brave browser
The best you can get for media consumption and advanced privacy
Brave is often the default browser for someone who is security and privacy-conscious. It offers Brave Shields, which have one remarkable security feature: anti-fingerprinting.
Most, if not all, browsers let websites identify you based on your device’s unique hardware and software configuration (AKA digital footprint). Brave actively randomizes this data, making you appear to be a completely different user to trackers. This ensures true anonymity and security without requiring complex setups.
Besides security, Brave’s true hidden gem is its Background Play feature. Minimizing Chrome usually stops any video or audio from playing. Brave fixes this natively.
You can start a video or podcast and lock the screen, or switch to another app and continue working there, and the audio will keep playing in the background. I often use this feature on my old phone with less storage; instead of downloading separate apps for Spotify or YouTube, I use Brave.
