Any access Gemini has to Gmail is limited to isolated tasks like summarizing lengthy emails, and the assistant does not retain user data after processing requests. How Google Says Gemini Handles Gmail Data

Google’s Keyword post lays out two core privacy commitments. First, Gemini does not train its foundational AI models on users’ personal emails or Photos library content; its models learn only from limited information like specific prompts and responses, not the underlying personal data users store across Google services. When a user asks Gemini to summarize a thread of work emails, the model processes the content to generate the summary but does not incorporate the email text into its training data.

Second, Gemini processes user information only to complete specific requests and discards the data once a task is finished. Google is framing this as a fundamental architectural choice rather than a policy toggle that could change in a future update.

To illustrate the approach, Google used an analogy in the post:

“We don’t train our systems to learn your license plate number; we train them to understand that when you ask for one, we can locate it.”
