Mobile gaming is big nowadays and it is also starting to get a hold of traditional PC gamers thanks to handheld consoles. If you’ve been considering such a handheld that bridges console familiarity with PC flexibility, the ROG Xbox Ally powered by AMD’s Ryzen Z2 processor is one of the few devices designed to do that and it is currently at under $500 making it a very good deal (purchase link under the specs table down below)
The Ally boots directly into the Xbox full-screen interface, so if you’re already comfortable with Xbox controllers and menus, the transition is seamless. At the same time, because it runs Windows 11, you’re not locked into one ecosystem and can play titles across Steam, Epic, or other PC game stores.
The Ally uses a 7‑inch Full HD touchscreen with a fairly decent refresh rate of 120Hz. That means fast-paced games won’t suffer from motion blur, and you can still use the screen for desktop tasks when needed. The controls are modeled after Xbox Wireless Controllers, with contoured grips and balanced weight distribution. This can matter for longer sessions as the device should feel less fatiguing to hold. The chassis is redesigned with textured grips and other such features.

Internally, Asus uses its Zero Gravity cooling system and the company touts that it keeps performance stable whether the device is upright, sideways, or tilted. Compared to the original ROG Ally, the Xbox Ally variant packs the AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor and a larger battery. This APU comprises a 4-core 8-thread Zen 2 chip and the integrated graphics is 8CU RDNA 2-based. Asus claims this combination improves efficiency and extends playtime away from a wall outlet.
