NextEra Energy has expanded its partnership with Google Cloud to develop multiple gigawatt-scale data center campuses across the US.
You’ve already probably guessed the reason. They’re creating dedicated power ecosystems designed from scratch to feed AI’s ravenous appetite for electricity.
The timing couldn’t be more critical. Major tech companies purchased 9.6 gigawatts of clean energy in just the first half of this year, representing 40% of global demand. Yet the industry faces a jaw-dropping projection: they’ll need 362 additional gigawatts worldwide by 2035 just to sustain data center growth.
The grid
According to the announcement, NextEra and Google plan to launch an AI-powered grid management product by mid-2026 that will predict equipment failures, optimize crew scheduling, and enhance grid reliability during storms and peak demand periods. This represents the first commercial fusion of AI-driven grid intelligence with massive data center development.
The partnership develops multiple gigawatt-scale data center campuses, each with accompanying generation capacity. They’re abandoning the traditional model where data centers simply connect to existing grid infrastructure. Rather than competing for limited grid capacity, the duo is building self-contained energy universes.
Building on momentum, the companies already have about 3.5 GW in operation or contracted from their existing partnership. NextEra has secured over 2.5 gigawatts of clean energy contracts from Meta across the US, demonstrating massive tech company demand.
Energy scramble
Here’s the reality: Since ChatGPT’s release, Meta’s emissions jumped 64%, Google’s rose 51%, Amazon’s increased 33%, and Microsoft’s climbed 23%. The AI boom is obliterating climate commitments across the industry.
Data centers worldwide consumed about 415 terawatt-hours of electricity in 2024, with projections showing this could surge to 945 TWh by 2030. Goldman Sachs research suggests total data center power demand could increase 160% by 2030 compared with 2023 levels.
This partnership represents more than infrastructure development—it’s survival strategy. In the US alone, data centers could account for 8% of national electricity use by decade’s end, making solutions like this absolutely essential for industry survival.
Adding nuclear power to the mix, Google and NextEra are partnering to restart the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Iowa by 2029, which will generate about 615 megawatts of power under a 25-year agreement.

As AI training models continue their notorious power consumption patterns and America’s aging power system struggles desperately to keep pace, partnerships like this may represent the only viable path forward for sustainable AI growth at the scale the industry demands.
