New Runway Gen-4.5 AI Video Model Dethrones Google Veo 3 and OpenAI Sora 2


Claiming a decisive victory over trillion-dollar incumbents, Runway has released Gen-4.5, a new video generation model that secures the top spot on the Video Arena leaderboard, an independent benchmarking platform.

Achieving an Elo score of 1,247, the system displaces Google’s Veo 3 and pushes OpenAI’s Sora 2 Pro to seventh place. Inference runs on NVIDIA’s new Blackwell architecture, marking a rare production deployment of the high-end chips.

Framing the release as a vindication of its independent strategy, the launch follows Runway’s rejection of a takeover bid from Meta earlier this year.

Defying the conventional wisdom that scale equals supremacy, Runway has outmaneuvered its larger rivals in a direct head-to-head comparison. Dubbed Gen-4.5, the startup’s new model has claimed the #1 position on the Artificial Analysis Video Arena leaderboard, a metric derived from blind A/B testing where human raters compare outputs without knowing the source model.

Securing the top spot is particularly significant because the benchmark relies on “prompt adherence” and “motion quality” rather than just resolution or frame rate. By focusing on these qualitative metrics, Runway has managed to displace Google’s Veo 3, which now sits at #2, and push OpenAI’s Sora 2 Pro down to #7.

 

These results highlight the vulnerability of generalist AI labs to specialized, vertical-focused startups. While giants like Google and OpenAI spread their resources across text, code, and multimodal research, Runway has concentrated exclusively on video dynamics.

Explaining the efficiency of this focused approach, Runway CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela noted that “we managed to out-compete trillion-dollar companies with a team of 100 people. You can get to frontiers just by being extremely focused and diligent.”

A gap of this magnitude suggests that smaller, agile teams can still compete effectively against massive corporate R&D departments by maintaining a tight product focus.

Under the Hood: The Blackwell Advantage

Marking a significant shift in the competitive landscape, the model moves beyond simple “video generation” to what the company describes as “world models” that understand physics. Development was conducted entirely on NVIDIA infrastructure, spanning R&D to inference.

Crucially, inference is explicitly optimized for NVIDIA’s new Blackwell architecture, alongside existing Hopper GPUs. Prioritizing specific architecture suggests Runway is focusing on inference efficiency to manage the high costs of video generation at scale.

Highlighting the technical leap in physical simulation, the official announcement details the model’s new capabilities:

“Gen-4.5 achieves unprecedented physical accuracy and visual precision. Objects move with realistic weight, momentum and force. Liquids flow with proper dynamics. Surface details render at great fidelity.”

 

Specific simulation improvements include realistic liquid dynamics, object weight, and momentum conservation. Surface details and textures now maintain coherence even during rapid camera movements or object deformations, addressing a common failure point in generative video.

Validating the technical partnership, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang stated to be “proud that Runway built their groundbreaking video and world model on NVIDIA GPUs, and are thrilled to see Runway revolutionize the video generation industry.”

By deploying on Blackwell, Runway becomes one of the first companies to leverage the architecture’s specific optimizations for generative inference, potentially giving it a cost-performance edge over competitors still relying on older hardware.

Super Sunday: A Three-Way Battle for Video Supremacy

December 1, 2025, has emerged as a notable “Super Sunday” for the AI video industry with three simultaneous major releases. While Runway targets the high-end proprietary market, Chinese tech giants launched aggressive open-source challengers on the same day.

ByteDance released ByteDance’s Vidi2, a 12-billion parameter model focused on “Spatio-Temporal Grounding”. Unlike pure generators, Vidi2’s architecture prioritizes editing and understanding, identifying where objects are in time and space to enable precise manipulation.

Simultaneously, Tencent launched Tencent’s HunyuanVideo-1.5, an 8.3-billion parameter model. Tencent’s strategy targets consumer hardware, with the model optimized to run on GPUs with just 14GB of VRAM, effectively commoditizing high-quality generation for enthusiasts.

A clear contrast exists between the approaches. Runway offers a closed, high-performance SaaS product, while Chinese firms are democratizing the technology via open source. Such divergence creates a bifurcated market where enterprise users may pay for Runway’s fidelity, while individual creators flock to free, locally runnable alternatives.

The Cost of Independence: Why Runway Rejected Meta

Today’s release serves as a strategic vindication following Runway’s rejection of a failed takeover bid from Meta earlier in 2025. Meta, seeking to bolster its own video capabilities, had attempted to acquire the startup to plug gaps in its generative media stack.

Instead of selling, Runway doubled down on building a comprehensive ecosystem. Functionally, the new model links with the Aleph video editor released in July, creating a workflow that mirrors Adobe’s approach but with native AI tools: capture with Gen-4.5 and refine with Aleph.

Reflecting on the decision to remain independent, Valenzuela emphasized that “it does feel like a very interesting moment in time where the era of efficiency and research is upon us. [We’re] excited to be able to make sure that AI is not monopolized by two or three companies.”

Pricing for Gen-4.5 is described as “comparable” to previous tiers, indicating an aggressive move to retain market share against commoditized rivals. Building on the foundation laid by Runway’s Gen-4, which introduced cinematic controls earlier this year, this strategy further cements the company’s position as a premium tool for professional creators.
