Samsung is preparing two distinct Galaxy Z Fold models for 2026. The new device, spotted in the GSMA database under model number SM-F971U, is not a Galaxy Z Flip 8 FE as sources once claimed, but rather a completely separate Fold-class phone with the internal codename H8.
Understanding Samsung’s model numbers clears up the confusion. The company uses SM-F7xx for Flip devices and SM-F9xx for Fold models. Since SM-F971U begins with the 9 series, it belongs squarely in the Fold family, not the Flip line.
Alongside the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 (codenamed Q8, model SM-F976), Samsung is developing this H8 variant as a parallel project launching in 2026, SmartPrix reports. The H8 takes a different approach by addressing one of the Fold series’ biggest complaints: the narrow cover screen. The new model will be shorter and wider when folded, giving it a feel closer to a regular smartphone. More importantly, Samsung hopes to achieve an almost-square inner display by combining two 18:9 aspect ratio panels.
This dual-Fold strategy couldn’t have better timing: Apple is also expected to launch its first foldable iPhone in 2026. The phone should cost somewhere between $2,000 and $2,400 and is likely to feature a creaseless display.
By offering both the traditional Q8 and the experimental H8, Samsung gives different customer segments options to choose from when Apple enters the foldable market.
