Rare originally introduced the dangerous volcanic region, dubbed the Devil’s Roar, to Sea of Thieves back in 2018. The cluster of islands in this area hasn’t received that much attention since then, but that’s about to change with the upcoming seasonal update: Return to the Devil’s Roar.
As for what’s included in it, Rare revealed that the update will bring the Eternal Guard as a new type of foe for players to overcome. The ancient enemy will be able to go almost invisible when fighting to flank players, using its powerful spear to launch ranged attacks. When defeated, these foes will drop keys to a certain new location.
Players can now run into the new Sanctuaries of the Banished underground structures across the Devil’s Roar islands. A key from a defeated Eternal Guard is required to open them. Inside will be “banished ancient treasure” to loot and sell to trading companies for gold and prestige.
Inside the same chambers, crews can also find the new Trident of the Banished weapon. This new variant of the rare ranged weapon fires faster-charging energy bubbles that also deal more damage.
Meanwhile, two Smugglers’ League members have moved into The Devil’s Roar for easier access as well. Rare plans to bring in fresh events focused on the region later in the season as well. Moreover, being a new season, plenty of ship and player cosmetics are incoming via the free and premium battle passes as well as rewards for completing deeds and commendations.
Sea of Thieves Season 18: Return to the Devil’s Roar is releasing on December 11, 2025, across PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
Earlier this year, the Microsoft-owned studio also revealed its plans for 2026. The new year will finally bring the long-promised custom servers for players. These servers let premium subscribers gain access to fully customizable sessions that allow custom commands, game rule changes, weather control, camera tools for cinematic shots, and more.
