For years, Google overhauled the design of Pixel phones on a constant basis. The Pixel 6, Pixel 7, Pixel 8, and Pixel 9 all introduced radically new looks compared to their predecessors, before stabilizing with the Pixel 9 and Pixel 10. Design is subjective, but I think the Pixel 8 series — and specifically the Pixel 8a — represents peak Pixel build quality. It was the last of Google’s curvy and compact pebble-shaped handsets, and the Pixel 8a’s comfort was unmatched as a result.
Google Pixel phones have a problem, and it’s that they’re becoming oversized. The screens are getting larger, the chassis are getting thicker, and the builds are getting heavier. Switching back to the tiny Pixel 8a feels like a breath of fresh air. It’s a 6.1-inch smartphone that small phone lovers will greatly appreciate, and it’s slightly thinner than the Pixel 9a and Pixel 10a. The phone weighs 188 grams, which is manageable, albeit marginally heavier than the newer A-series Pixel phones.
It’s hard to argue with the new Pixel 9a and Pixel 10a designs on paper, as they allowed Google to introduce almost-flat and flat backs, while making room for bigger batteries. That said, I consider the camera bar to be a staple of Pixel design, and the Pixel 8a is the last model to include one. No, I don’t count the “camera oval” on the Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 series as a camera bar.
Throw it all together, and the Pixel 8a is my favorite Google phone design. The slick matte back cover, curved aluminum side rails, compact 6.1-inch 120Hz display, classic Pixel camera bar, and manageable dimensions help the Pixel 8a master the in-hand feel.

Google Tensor chips are known for being underpowered compared to their Apple and Qualcomm counterparts. However, the Tensor G3 chip inside the Pixel 8a still holds up today. With the Tensor G3 mobile platform, Google solved the overheating issues that plagued Tensor G2 devices. It equipped all Tensor G3 phones, including the Pixel 8a, with 8GB of memory. That’s the same amount of RAM you get with the Pixel 9a or Pixel 10a, for what it’s worth.
Many of the same AI features that run on newer A-series Pixels will work on the Pixel 8a accordingly. It’s capable of powering on-device Gemini Nano models for on-device processing. This enables modern AI features like AI Weather Reports in the Pixel Weather app, for instance. Classic Google AI features such as multimodal Gemini Live and Circle to Search are here, too.
With seven years of guaranteed software updates, the Pixel 8a is already running the latest Android 16 version that brought a stylish Material 3 Expressive visual overhaul. It still has many more Android OS upgrades to come, as the support window covers you through May 2031. You can buy a refurbished Pixel 8a today and easily get five years of steady usage out of it.

The one thing the Pixel 8a really has going for it is its camera system. It’s easily the best camera arrangement available in the phone’s refurbished price point of $200 to $350. The phone has a 64MP, f/1.89 primary shooter and a 13MP ultrawide lens. The main camera offers a 1/1.7-inch sensor size, and combined with Night Sight mode, this makes the Pixel 8a excellent at low-light photography. While there’s no telephoto camera here, the Pixel 8a provides 2x optical-quality zoom by using sensor cropping.

The Google Pixel 8a features the same Tensor G3 chipset as the other Pixel phones, a battery that will easily last you all day, and a great camera. Combine that with smart AI features and seven years of updates, and that’s a bargain considering the price.
