It’s not always possible to catch these sounds, especially when you’re distracted or wearing headphones. Thankfully, your Android phone has a feature called Sound Notifications that can help you with this.
When it detects important sounds like a smoke alarm, a knock at the door, or even your landline phone ringing, it sends a popup alert right to your screen. It essentially turns your phone into a second set of ears, so you never miss a sound that matters.

The Sound Notifications feature on Android uses your phone’s microphone to listen for specific sounds around you. It’s primarily designed to help those who are hard of hearing so that they stay aware of their surroundings. But here’s the cool part. Even if your hearing is perfectly fine, you’ll actually want to use this accessibility feature.
Think about the moments when you are totally lost in a game, deep into your favorite music, or simply working with noise-canceling headphones on. In those situations, your phone can still keep track of those important sounds you might not notice and gives you a notification like a tap on the shoulder.
Setting up the Sound Notifications feature is easy
Set it and forget it
Setting up the Sound Notifications feature only takes a few taps. You can find the feature inside Android’s accessibility menu. Open the Settings app and head to Accessibility > Hearing enhancements > Sound Notifications. Turn it on, and your phone will start listening for sounds in the background.
If you can’t find the Sound Notifications feature on your phone, download the Live Transcribe & Notifications app from the Play Store and enable the feature from there.
By default, this feature alerts you of several important sounds, like smoke alarms, fire alarms, sirens, a baby crying, a dog barking, someone knocking on the door, doorbell ringing, appliance beeps, landline phone ringing, and even running water. If that sounds like a bit too much, you can set your preferences.
Tap Edit sound types and use the toggles to set which sounds you want to be notified about. That way, you won’t get interrupted every time the neighbour’s dog barks, which matters if you live in a busy area like I do. Once you’re all set up, you can tap the icon in the top left corner to see a demo of how the feature works.

The Sound Notifications feature also keeps a log of the sounds it hears. This is useful if you are ever away from your phone and want to check what happened. You can even save certain sounds and give them unique names. This way, you can differentiate things like your washing machine’s end-of-cycle beep from your microwave’s timer tone.
And it gets better. You are not limited to the preset list of sounds this feature recognizes. You can teach your phone to listen for sounds that are unique to your surroundings. Perhaps your appliance has a tone that’s different and not recognized by default, or you want to be notified every time the garage door closes. Simply record the sound once, and your phone will keep an ear out for it from then on.
In the Sound Notifications menu, tap the gear icon in the top right corner and select Custom sounds. Now, tap Add sound and hit Record. You’ll need to capture the sound in a 20-seconds audio clip. Of course, the clearer the recording, the better your phone will be at recognizing the sound later.

The Sound Notifications feature is all about making sure you don’t miss anything important. By default, your phone vibrates and fires off the camera flash every time you receive one of these sounds.
The extra visual cue is handy, but isn’t always necessary. If an alert is something less urgent, such as your washing machine finishing its job, you can customize how it appears. In the Sound Notifications menu, tap the gear icon and select Ways to be notified. Then, use the toggles to set your preferences for various alert types.
The big question is… what about privacy?
If the idea of your phone constantly listening makes you uneasy, here’s some good news. Sound Notifications works locally on your device. Any audio it hears stays on your phone and is never sent to Google. The only time sound data might be shared is if you willingly include it while submitting your feedback.
